What’s the Nature of NIMHANS entrance examination?

NIMHANS asks questions strictly according to the syllabus which in this case is the PG Psychology syllabus of Christ University, Bangalore (but questions aren’t always asked from the same). The questions are asked from every domain of psychology and they cover each and every part.

Which areas dominate the question paper?

The following five domains of Psychology dominate the paper:

1. Statistics & Research Methodology 2. Cognitive Psychology 3. Social Psychology  4. Personality & Developmental Psychology 5. Biopsychology 6. Psychometrics

A detailed review of the question paper

Cognitive Sciences: NIMHANS mostly asks factual questions about learning theories, memory and attention.

Biopsychology: they ask questions about hormones, brain anatomy and functions.

Personality & Developmental: Questions have been asked about different theories of personality and different stages of developmental theories.

Social Psychology: Mostly questions have been asked from social cognition, compliance and other topics of social psychology.

Clinical Psychology & Abnormal Psychology: Questions from this part have been asked from different therapies and their details. Some factual questions have been asked about therapies and their developers. Questions in abnormal psychology are mostly asked about DSM (History and developmental) and personality and sexual disorders & schizophrenia. But as mentioned in earlier posts MPhil Clinical Psychology is not about DSM and disorders but more than that; however, you should have a general idea about every disorder. Factual questions about disorders have been asked in previous years (like who gave the term autism, who used the term neurotic anxiety etc.)

Research & Statistics: A fair amount of questions have been asked from this portion and questions are mostly asked about different experimental designs and sampling methods, validity and reliability types. From stats, questions have been asked about central tendency, parametric and nonparametric tests and NPC, Factorial analysis, chi-square tests etc.

Psychometrics: NIMHANS asks questions about tests and their subtests. Questions have been asked about the concept of validity/reliability as used in psychometric tests. They also ask questions regarding the use of different tests.
